VPN on a TV: Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV in 4 steps, Samsung and LG via router

A VPN on a TV is set up differently depending on the system inside. On Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV you can install the NvoVPN app — as an APK file, since the TV's store may not show it. Samsung, LG and Apple TV never have VPN apps — there the VPN runs on the router. Below are 4 steps for Android TV and Fire TV, and where to go for the other TVs.    Install the app on your TV

   Install the Downloader app from your TV's store and allow it to install unknown apps — the TV will offer to open settings itself. In Downloader, type in the address nvovpn.com/download/android: the file NvoVPN-Android.apk (about 280 MB) starts downloading. After it finishes, tap "Install". Detailed paths for Android TV and Fire TV are below.

   Sign in with a code

   Typing a password with a remote is awkward. On your phone or computer, open your account → "Connection" and get a six-digit code. In the app on the TV, choose "I have a login code" and enter it. The code is valid for 10 minutes.

   Allow the VPN

   Press the shield. The TV asks once for permission for the VPN connection — choose "OK". This is the standard question Android asks for any VPN, and it will not repeat.

   Check that the VPN is working

   The shield turned green — all of the TV's traffic now goes through the NvoVPN server, chosen for you. To check, open the "What is my IP" page in the TV's browser: it shows the server's address, not your provider's. No browser? The connection status is visible in the app itself.

Which TV do you have

• Android TV, Google TV — Sony, Philips, TCL, Xiaomi, Haier, Android boxes, Chromecast with Google TV: install the app using the steps above.
• Amazon Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube — Android inside too, but with its own store: install the app through Downloader, a slightly longer path — see the section below.
• Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS), Apple TV — the app cannot be installed, you need a VPN on a router. A breakdown by brand is in "VPN by TV brand".

What you need

• A TV or box on Android TV, Google TV or Fire TV.
• The Downloader app from your TV's store. An alternative is "Send files to TV" to send the file from your phone, or a plain USB drive.
• An NvoVPN account — the same one you use on the website. Do not have one? Sign up: you only need an email address, no card required.
• A phone or computer nearby — to get the login code from your account.

Android TV and Google TV: installing the APK

Permission to install: "Settings" → "Apps" → "Security & restrictions" → "Install unknown apps" → turn it on for Downloader. On some models the path is different: "Settings" → "Privacy" → "Security" → "Install unknown apps".

1. Open Downloader and type nvovpn.com/download/android in the address bar — the file starts downloading.
2. When it finishes, Downloader offers to install the app — tap "Install". If the TV asks about unknown sources again, confirm.
3. Without Downloader: download the APK on a phone or computer, copy it to a USB drive and open it with the TV's file manager, or send it over with "Send files to TV".

Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube

1. Unlock developer mode: "Settings" → "My Fire TV" → "About" → click the device name seven times, until a message says developer mode is on.
2. Go back to "My Fire TV" → "Developer Options" and turn on Apps from Unknown Sources (in newer interfaces, "Install unknown apps", a per-app permission).
3. Install the Downloader app from the Amazon store, enter nvovpn.com/download/android in it, wait for the download, and click "Install".
4. Sign in with the code from your account (step 2) and press the shield.

Samsung, LG and Apple TV

There are no VPN apps for Tizen (Samsung) or webOS (LG) — a limitation of the platforms themselves. Apple TV allowed VPN apps from tvOS 17, but there is no AmneziaWG client for it. In all three cases the answer is the same: bring the VPN up on the router and route the TV through it — step by step in "How to set up a VPN on a router". If your router does not support AmneziaWG or WireGuard, an inexpensive travel router with that feature can sit between the TV and your home network. FAQ

Why can't I find NvoVPN in the TV store? The Google TV and Amazon stores do not list every phone app — so on a TV, the APK is always the reliable route. The app itself works just like on a phone.

Does the TV count as a separate device? Yes, like a phone or laptop — up to five devices at once on one subscription. Through a router, the whole home counts as one.

Will foreign streaming services open? We do not promise access to specific streaming services: many of them detect data-center addresses and restrict playback. A VPN on a TV is, above all, about protection and access to sites that do not open on your network.

Is the speed enough for video? A few megabits are enough for HD, about 25 for 4K. If video buffers through the VPN, pick a closer server or connect the TV with a cable instead of Wi-Fi.
