VPN for Huawei and Honor: install the APK in 4 steps, plus HarmonyOS NEXT

A VPN for Huawei and Honor installs as an APK file from our website: these phones often do not have Google Play, and our app is not in AppGallery. Download the file, allow the install, sign in, press the shield — the whole thing takes three to five minutes. If you are in Russia, it works the same way — see the separate block below. One exception: HarmonyOS 5 and later (NEXT), where Android apps do not run at all — what to do about that is at the end of the article.

   Download the APK file

   Tap Download APK in your phone's browser. The file NvoVPN-Android.apk lands in the Downloads folder. Open it from the notification shade or the Downloads folder.

   Allow installs from this source

   Your phone will say installing from this source is not allowed and offer to open settings. Turn on the permission for your browser (or for the "Files" app, if you opened the file from there), go back and tap "Install". You are asked once.

   Sign in

   With email and password — or tap "I have a login code" and enter the six digits from your account, Connection tab. The code is valid for 10 minutes. The "Sign in with Google" button will not work on a phone without Google services.

   Press the shield

   The first time you connect, your phone asks once for permission for the VPN connection — tap "OK". The shield turns green — protection is on, and a server is chosen for you. Tap the shield again to disconnect.

What you need

• A Huawei phone on EMUI (any version) or HarmonyOS 4.x and earlier — regular Android underneath, and the APK installs. That is most Huawei phones sold in Russia and the CIS.
• A Honor phone on MagicOS — this is Android. Global versions have Google Play; firmware made for China does not — install the APK then, as on Huawei.
• An NvoVPN account — the same one you use on the website. Do not have one? Sign up: you only need an email address, no card required.
• About 280 MB of free space for the APK file.

Allow background work — or the VPN will disconnect in a couple of minutes

Huawei and Honor's custom interfaces close background apps more aggressively than stock Android — that is the most common reason behind "the VPN switched itself off". Set this up once:

1. "Settings" → "Battery" → "App launch" and find NvoVPN.
2. Switch it from automatic management to manual.
3. In the dialog that appears, turn on every toggle — auto-launch, secondary launch, and running in the background.
4. Optionally: open the recent apps list, pull the NvoVPN card down and lock it — that way the system will not unload the app when memory runs low.

After that the connection holds just like on any other phone: it survives a locked screen and a change of network.

A few useful things

• The APK does not update itself. When a new version comes out, download the file again and install it over the old one — your sign-in and settings stay. Follow the news section in your account so you do not miss an update.
• No password? If the account was created through Google or Apple, set a password under "Settings" in your account — or sign in with a code, as in step 3.
• Is the network throttling VPN traffic? The app notices on its own that no data is flowing and switches to stealth mode — disguising the connection as an ordinary website. How this works is in "Why VPNs stop working and how stealth mode works".

HarmonyOS 5 and later (NEXT): there is no app

This is worth knowing before you buy a subscription. HarmonyOS NEXT was built with no Android compatibility: APK files cannot be installed there at all, not just "blocked by default". No clients for our protocols — AmneziaWG and VLESS — have been released for this system, so you cannot connect such a phone directly, either with our app or a third-party one. What is left:

• A VPN on the router. At home the phone joins the Wi-Fi and gets protected internet along with the rest of the network, with nothing to install. Step by step in "How to set up a VPN on a router".
• A travel router. A small box that supports AmneziaWG or WireGuard: connect it to the hotel Wi-Fi, and connect the phone to it.
• Another device. A subscription covers up to five devices: a laptop, tablet or a second phone on regular Android connects as usual.

About AppGallery and workarounds

VPN apps do turn up in Huawei's store, but its policy is unstable: major services have been removed from it. Our app is not in AppGallery — use the APK from the site instead. Third-party layers that emulate Google services only work on systems that still have an Android layer, and we do not recommend installing our app inside such containers: a VPN needs a system-level permission, and it behaves unpredictably in a sandbox.

FAQ

How do I know if I have HarmonyOS NEXT? "Settings" → "About phone": if the system version starts with 5 or 6, it is NEXT. An indirect sign: apps in AppGallery are marked "for HarmonyOS", and familiar Android apps will not install.

Does Honor need the APK or Google Play? If the phone has Google Play, install from there: it is simpler, and the app updates itself. No store — the APK from the site.

The VPN turns on, but drops a minute later. Background work is not set up — go back to the section above. Still no luck? Check "Private DNS" in the network settings and see "What to do if the VPN will not connect".

Can I set up the VPN with the system tools? The built-in VPN section in the phone settings only supports older protocols like IPsec and L2TP, while we run on AmneziaWG and VLESS — you cannot set those up there.
